Interior Designer's Do's and Don'ts

Do not use a single piece of art that is too small for your wall space. Cover 2/3 or the width of the wall to be decorated with art or treasures you wish to hang, grouping several items or pictures together to fill the space at hand.
Do not paint your room or project without testing the paint color first!
Do not place too much furniture in a small room. When in doubt, keep it out! Try to place pieces away from the wall as often as possible. This will create great seating arrangements and maximize the space at hand.
Do not place lamps on tables and dressers that are too small. Use lamps that are 28" to 32" in height for end tables and night stands. A dresser lamp should be 20" to 24" in height. There are exceptions to this rule.
Do not be afraid to layout your furniture and decorate your home. Leaving a home in disarray shows lack of confidence. Move forward . . . do something and soon your home will be an expression of you and a great place to be.
Do hang your art work approximately 60" from the floor. When using more than one piece of art, start with the largest piece of art and spread out from there.
Do mix scale, texture and size when accessorizing a room.
Do not line up accessories on shelves or tables like they are ready for battle! Vary the heights and stagger the pieces, usually working with an odd number of pieces. Books can create a great pedestal for a small accessory.
Do place family treasures around your house. This will make a house a home, reflecting the interests and hobbies of the people living there.
Do balance fabrics and color throughout your home. Pick an inspiration piece for each room in your home. (A fabric, art, or rug etc.) Pull your colors from those pieces and carry one of the colors throughout your entire home.
Do emphasize the architectural features of your space. Place your furniture in arrangements that will complement your rooms. Use the architectural features as assets.
